On Sunday, despite the heat here in the District, I went with a few friends to Great Falls National Park in Virginia for a day of hiking. I had never heard of this place before and we wanted to get out of the city for a day. This place was gorgeous with rapids and lots of hiking trails. It is easily accessible by the Metro (end of the Silver Line), plus it is right near a huge mall!
When we arrived, I didn’t know what to expect. Back home in Connecticut, I live on a mountain and we have trails that I’ve hiked countless times, but Great Falls Park was a little different. My friends and I chose to walk the River Trail which runs right next to the Potomac River. Along the trail is an incredible overlook and it was such a beautiful sight. Some recent summer storms have really pushed the rapids and the sound of the running water was just so refreshing.
Later on, we walked further up the trail and climbed a bunch of rocks to get good pictures. It was so hot, but we had to do it for the Insta! We passed so many families (including countless dogs) and people were grilling and having a great time. I’m so happy to have found this great escape from the city!
