How to “Metro” Like a Local

Having a metro stop on our campus is super convenient for going into downtown Washington D.C. for events, museums, the National Mall, and of course, internships. Our Brookland-CUA metro stop is on the red line (the best line), and we are only about a 15 minute trip from the best of the downtown area.  We’re also three stops from Union Station, which is great for travelling home on breaks! Check out our helpful tips for getting the most of your metro experience by practicing proper metro etiquette!

  • Never esca-left! The left side of the elevator is for walking up the stairs, and the right side is for standing still. If you are standing on the left side, people will ask you to move (while probably throwing some shade).
  • If you are out in the city and need to get back to campus, remember “Glenmont, go home!” Take the red line toward Glenmont and you will get back to Brookland-CUA.
  • Load money before you get on the metro for the whole trip so you don’t have to use the exit fare machine. If you do end up stuck and need to use the exit fare, it only takes cash so make sure you have some before getting on the metro.
  • When getting on the metro, stand to the side to let people off the car before you get on. Once you’re on the car, make sure to move to the center so that people who get on behind you have room to stand as well.
  • In case you need to use the restroom when you are in the metro station, talk to the station manager and they can escort you to some ~top secret~ metro restrooms.
  • If you see elderly people or expectant mothers, let them have your seat! #chivalryisnotdead

The metro is so convenient for getting all over Washington D.C. and following this simple and easy advice can ensure that you have a great metro ride no matter where your destination is.
