Things I Wish I Knew As a Freshman

Hi everyone, I’m Isa! I am a theology major, Spanish minor, and on a pre-med track. I am also earning a certificate in Spanish for healthcare here at Catholic U. As you can tell, I’m pretty busy as a rising junior, but I’ve learned a lot along the way!  I am so excited to give you some advice on things that I wish that I knew as a college freshman.

The first piece of advice that I can give you is to go to all of the freshman orientation events. It’s a great place to meet new people and connect with your classmates. One of the best events is “Metro Madness,” which is a scavenger hunt across D.C. that is especially helpful in learning how to use the Metro and how to get around the city.

Next bit of advice: give yourself time to adjust! Don’t expect that everything will be settled within your first week. College can be scary, but it’s important to remember that your new classmates are going through the same things. Everyone is worried about making new friends, meeting professors, and missing home, but remember that you are not alone in feeling this way.

Next, we are talking about residence life! Your dorm room is going to be your home away from home so bring things to decorate your space to make it feel personal. Maybe some fun lights, posters, and pictures of friends and family. Just don’t forget Command Strips! You might even consider picking a theme with your roommate

Now onto some more of the fun advice. Take advantage of living in the nation’s capital! Living in D.C. is a really unique part of the experience of Catholic U students. Be sure to explore as much as you can. There are so many opportunities that are free or discounted for college students here in the District; just take a look at all the Smithsonian museums and galleries, which you can visit for free: https://www.si.edu/museums

Another helpful tip: look for free and discounted student tickets to shows at the Kennedy Center, U Street Music Hall, and the Black Cat. There are also lots of fun and free festivals in D.C. throughout the year like the Cherry Blossom Festival in April and the H Street Festival in September. Once a year in May, the European Union Embassies open their doors to the public with food and cultural events. You can’t beat having fun for free!

Have fun exploring when you visit campus or begin as a student in the fall!
