Have You Ever Heard of Hurling?

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, a senior marketing major from New York. If you’re coming to campus as a freshman this fall, you might be wondering what types of clubs you can join. Well, with over 100 student-run organizations, you’re bound to find some unique offerings. Today I want to spotlight a fast-growing club on campus: The Catholic University Hurling Club!

The Hurling Club is a co-ed athletic club that allows students to compete in the traditional Irish sport of Hurling. Hurling, often referred to as the “fastest game on grass,” is similar to lacrosse or field hockey. Hurlers use a wooden stick (hurley) to hit a ball (sliotar) through a set of goal posts. The teams are made up of midfielders (offensive players), defense, and a goalie. Previously a joint club with CUA Gaels, The CUA Hurling Club became an independent club in 2019. It is part of the Southeast Division of the NCGAA (National Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association) along with Virginia Tech, UNC, and The Citadel. The CUA Hurling Club currently ranks second in the region, following the November 2019 Regional Finals.

The Hurling Club is a welcoming group that wants to recruit enthusiastic and competitive players. Most of the team had no prior knowledge of the sport before they came to Catholic,  so they’re always looking to teach the game to new players! You can see the team practicing on the University Mall or Law School lawn on Mondays and Thursdays. They compete in tournaments up and down the East Coast and plan to host their first home tournament this fall.

I have a bunch of friends on the team and they all love the sport, competition, and team environment. For more information you can email the captains, John and Ryan, at cardinalhurling@gmail.com. It’s easy to get involved here at Catholic with different academic, social, athletic, and service clubs. To check out some of the clubs and events we have on campus, you can go to this website

Can’t wait to see you on the field!
