Finding D.C.’s Wild Side

Hi everyone, Tyler here! I’m a senior politics major from Milton, Vermont with minors in sociology and philosophy. Now that we have made it to summer vacation, I’m ready to find some fun things to do to relax after a long semester.

Although Catholic University is located in the nation’s always bustling and busy capital city, nature is never far away. Last week, my friend John and I took a trip to Great Falls Park, right along the Maryland and Virginia border on the Potomac River. Great Falls offered a beautiful change of scenery to end the semester, and a great way to decompress after finals week!

Stormy day in Great Falls Park.

It has ample hiking trails and great spots for viewing wildlife. In our travels we found beaches, climbed rock walls and even explored a gold mine! All just a short drive from campus!

The D.C./Maryland/Virginia (a.k.a DMV) area has so much to offer and explore. Whether it’s in the heart of the city or on the outskirts, there is always adventure to be had. One of my other favorite places to hike is Rock Creek Park, located in the city’s upper west corner. Rock Creek was created in the 1890’s, and while it is relatively small, it has over 1,700 acres to explore. It has a number of different trails, and also is home to horse stables, a historic mill, and a planetarium. It is one of my favorite spots to decompress on the weekends, and has been a great way to get out of the house during the pandemic.

Disclaimer: John did not fall off this rock!

If you’re looking for a university with big-city connections, but don’t want to lose touch with nature, look no further! Catholic University has it all!

Stay tuned for my next adventure!
