Rainy Day or Any Day

Hi Everyone, Isa here! It’s a very rainy day in D.C., so I thought I would tell you about one of my favorite places to spend a rainy day: Union Market.

Since the early 1930s, Union Market (back then called Union Terminal Market since it is close to the train lines) has been one of the largest markets in D.C. (click here for a history lesson!). After undergoing a huge revitalization, Union Market became an Instagrammer’s dream with a wide variety of beautiful shops and photo-worthy food pop-ups. It is a great place to explore on the weekends or on a day like today when you need an indoor activity. It is located just a short walk from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station, which is just two stops from the station on Catholic’s campus.

This food hall is filled to the brim with great restaurants and shops. Although there is a huge outdoor seating area and rooftop area where you can attend outdoor yoga classes or sit with friends and enjoy some fresh air on a sunny day, the real action is inside (because, well, food). One of my favorites is Buffalo & Bergen, a bagel shop that is inspired by a New York soda-shop. My personal favorite order is the “Cheezus has risen.” This sandwich is not just any grilled cheese! It first begins with choosing your favorite bagel (mine is an everything bagel, of course). Next, the bagel is filled with swiss, provolone, and cheddar cheeses and the whole thing is griddled until the cheese is all melted and stretchy. YUM!

After that amazing sandwich, go ahead and take a SoulCycle class (we can all live out our L.A. dreams of being just like Emma Chamberlin)! During the pandemic SoulCycle is having outdoor cycling classes so you can soak up some sunshine while you spin. Or if it’s an inside kind of day, browse through books at Politics and Prose or pick up some to-die-for boutique home goods that are sure to make your residence hall dazzle.

All in all, Union Market is great in the rain, sun, snow, anything-D.C.-throws-your-way weather. Be sure to bring your appetite and a reusable shopping bag!
