Committed to Service

Hi everyone, my name is Leoul, I’m a rising junior Business management major with a specialization in sports management from Woodbridge, VA. Today, I want to tell you about one of the biggest parts about Catholic’s identity: service. Students are encouraged to volunteer to aid the community through Campus Ministry every single day with just about twenty different service opportunities each week, so it’s not hard to work it into your schedule.

The opportunities offered by campus ministry vary from helping children in the community learn how to read with DC Reads to feeding the homeless. You can volunteer at a retirement home or spend time at Ronald McDonald Family Room located in Children’s National Medical Center. Aside from day-to-day service opportunities, Campus Ministry also sponsors multiple domestic and international service trips over the summer and during Spring Break each year.

I’ve taken part in numerous service events that we have on and off campus, however, my most memorable ones were Mother Teresa Day of Service and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. These two days are our biggest service opportunities, with about 800 students coming together to complete various projects around D.C. during each of these annual events. With my group on Mother Teresa Day, I assisted a local monastery by cleaning and helping plant and harvest fruits and vegetables. For MLK Day, I took part in an environmental clean-up project with a team of other students to clean up a waterway in D.C. Participating in community service with your CatholicU peers is something you will never look back on and regret. You will look back and see that you took time out of your day to do something beneficial and vital to those who do not have the same privilege as you while simultaneously building stronger bonds with your classmates.
